Sources for DeKalb County, Georgia
DeKalb County, Georgia was created in 1822 from portions of Henry, Gwinnett, and Fayette Counties. Following the Indian Springs Treaty of 1821, these areas of land were opened to settlers after the removal of the Cherokee and Creek indians. Atlanta was the county seat of DeKalb County until 1853 when Fulton County was established and Atlanta was then county seat for Fulton County.

DeKalb History Center - Historical Society DeKalb County was formed from portions of Henry, Gwinnett, and Fayette counties. Other areas to research are Fulton, Milton and Campbell counties, the latter two of which are now defunct (although there are currently steps being taken to re-establish Milton County). All records created by the county government prior to 1842, with the exception of the Superior Court's records, were destroyed when the courthouse burned.
