'''David McLean''' (19 May 1922 – 12 Oct 1995) was an American film and television actor, best-known for appearing in many Marlboro television and print advertisements, starting in the early 1960s. <table><tr><td>http://news.bbc.co.uk/nol/shared/spl/hi/pop_ups/03/uk_goodbye_tobacco_ads/img/5.jpg</td><td>David McLean was born as Eugene Joseph Huth in Akron, Ohio. In addition to his work for Marlboro, McLean also starred as the title character in the short-lived 1960 television series, Tate, and appeared in numerous television series and feature films in the '60s and '70s. A lifelong smoker, McLean started suffering from emphysema in 1985, and had a tumour removed in 1994. After he found out that he had cancer, he became an anti-smoking advocate. At a meeting of stockholders of Philip Morris, maker of Marlboro, McLean requested they limit their advertising. He died of lung cancer at the age of 73, on October 12, 1995. In 1996, McLean's widow Lilo and son Mark Huth filed suit for wrongful death against Philip Morris, maker of Marlboro, claiming that they encouraged or even required cigarette smoking which caused his lung cancer. The family is represented by Don Howarth and Suzelle M. Smith with Howarth & Smith in Los Angeles, CA. and Scott Baldwin and Jack Baldwin with Baldwin & Baldwin in Marshall, TX. A fictitious version of this ironic situation was featured in the comic novel ''Thank You for Smoking''.</td></tr></table> ==Sources== *[http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9800E3DB1139F933A15753C1A963958260 David McLean The Marlboro Man, 73"], obituary by the AP Published: October 20, 1995 ''New York Times'' *[http://www.allbusiness.com/legal/torts-wrongful-death/7269468-1.html "The Original "Marlboro Man" Dies from Lung Cancer Caused by Smoking; Family Sues Tobacco..."], Publication: Business Wire Date: Thursday, September 19 1996 *[http://www.allbusiness.com/legal/trial-procedure-suits-claims/6702610-1.html "Texas Federal Judge Denies Tobacco Industry's Efforts to Dismiss Wrongful Death Action by Widow..."], Publication: Business Wire Date: Friday, August 27 1999 ==External links== *[http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0572522/bio "David McLean"], biography at IMDb *[http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0572522/ "David McLean"], filmography at IMDb *[http://movies.aol.com/celebrity/david-mclean/47820/biography "David McLean"] at Movies, AOL.com *[http://www.tv.com/david-mclean/person/63160/summary.html "David McLean"]at TV.com [[Category:Movies and Television]]
