Baptised 28 Mar 1573 in Cople, Bedfordshire, the son of [[Robert Spencer of Cople]] by his wife Rose Cokayne of Cokayne Hatley. Nicholas also lived in Cople, Bedfordshire. He married Mary Elmes, daughter of Thomas Elmes of Lylford, Northampton. Nicholas' children, all baptised in Cople: #Alice Spencer 12 Jan 1605; #Alice Spencer 25 Feb 1606, married Gaius Squier; #Mary Spencer 3 Sep 1609; #[[Nicholas Spencer II of Cople|Nicholas Spencer]] 15 Nov 1611, married Mary Gostwick; #Christian Spencer 23 Oct 1613; #Robert Spencer 14 Nov 1619, second son; #Rose Spencer 16 Feb 1623. London (1884). Page 141, "Spencer of Cople" ==Secondary Sources== *"The first mention of it [Rowlands] as a manor is found in 1531, when John Spencer made a settlement of it. His father Robert's name occurs a few years earlier as holding land in Cople. Thomas son of John Spencer died seised in 1547. He was succeeded by his son Robert, who was followed by his son Nicholas, who died about 1625. His son, another Nicholas, married Mary daughter of Sir Edward Gostwick of Willington, and died in 1643.
