His father was also named Charles Clarke. During World War I he was a Second Lieutenant in the 311th Infantry. He later joined the firm of Cromwell, Reid & Co.

Charles' father had died by Dec 1929. Charles married 26 Feb 1930 in a Baha'i ceremony presided over by Mirza Ahmad Sohrab to [[Elsie Benkard]], daughter of [[Julia Lynch Olin]] and her first husband [[J. Philip Benkard]].
