In 1943 Virginia Dell "Ginger" Cassidy was at Tri-State Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana studying to be a nurse. While there she met William Jefferson Blythe Jr who would become her first husband. On 24 Apr 1943, he had enlisted or re-enlisted in the Army. They were married 3 Sep 1943 in Texarkana, Miller County, Arkansas. He then, in mid-October, went for a tour of duty overseas for World War II. Virginia finished up her training and went back to Hope where she lived with her parents and worked as a nurse. Just after Bill returned in December 1945, he and Virginia went to live in Chicago, Cook County, [[Illinois]] for three months, where "...Bill had a job waiting for him... selling heavy equipment...."
