East of Eden

The movie opens in 1917 Monterey, [[Monterey County, California]] where we watch a woman dressed in black and wearing a veil walk past Cal Trask (James Dean) a young man, who is sitting on the sidewalk, to make a deposit at a bank.  She leaves and goes to her house, and Dean follows her.  Noticing him, she has her maid go get her strong-arm man Joe to talk to Cal, and find out what he wants.  But he won't tell why he's there.  He leaves Monterey and goes back to his home-town of Salinas (about 30 miles away).  There he meets up with his brother Aaron and Aaron's fiancee (Julie Harris), and we learn that their father is going to buy an ice-house to use to freeze vegetables.
