William A "Bill" Newsom Sr was born 30 Apr 1902 in San Francisco.  He was a general contractor who built homes in the Bay area. He was also a confidant of Edward G "Pat" Brown (1905-96), Governor of California 1958-66.  Bill had hired Pat as his attorney, but later convinced him to run for San Francisco district attorney.
