Henry Steel Olcott already had a long career behind him and was working sometimes as a journalist, when he was asked to investigate the spiritualistic happenings at the Eddy Homestead in Chittenden, Vermont for the Daily Graphic and/or the New York Sun, a New York City newspaper.  While there he happened to meet and began a long relationship with Helena Petrovna Blavatsky.  It wasn't long before they were investigating the Holmes in Philadelphia, and shortly afterward they moved in together into a flat in New York City, Henry leaving his wife and children to do so.
