Born in 1896, the son of Dr [[Weller van Hook]] (1862-1933)[http://www.mercksource.com/pp/us/cns/cns_hl_dorlands.jspzQzpgzEzzSzppdocszSzuszSzcommonzSzdorlandszSzdorlandzSzdmd_v_02zPzhtm] and Dr Anna (Whaley) van Hook.  Weller was a surgeon in Chicago, and the General Secretary of the [[Theosophical Society]] in the United States.  Hubert was selected by Leadbetter, about 1907 "...while on a lecture tour of American a few years before..." (Lutyens, "Awakening", Discus p 12) as the vehicle for the coming World Teacher, called Lord Maitreya by the Theosophists.
