James R. Anderson was born in 1850 in [[Hempstead County, Arkansas]] to James Anderson and his wife Clarinda Reeves, who were married Oct 28, 1841 in Hempstead County. James Anderson Sr was the son of John Anderson (1796-1862) by his wife Mary "Polly" Wilson (1802-1857).  Clarinda Reeves was the daughter of James Reeves (1794-1865) by his wife Susan Heath (1794-1857).

The family moved to Cass County, Texas shortly after the 1860 census as the father James Anderson died in Cass County, in 1862 and Clarinda in 1866.  James, his sister Susan and their brother Newton are listed on the 1870 Davis County, Texas census in the Hinkle household.  Newton went to Little River County, Arkansas and married Mary Parker.  Newton died between 1885 and 1890.
