James R. Anderson was born in [[Hempstead County, Arkansas]].  He is listed on the 1850 and 1860 Hempstead County census with parents. James Anderson (his father) and Clorinda Reeves (his mother) were married Oct 28, 1841 in Hempstead County and moved the family to Cass County, Texas shortly after the 1860 census as the father James Anderson died in Cass County, in 1862 and the mother Clorinda in 1866.  James, his sister Susan and their brother Newton are listed on the 1870 Davis, Cass County, Texas census in the Hinkle household.  Newton went to Little River County, Arkansas and married Mary Parker.  Newton died between 1885 and 1890.
