CHILDREN: - She had three sons with Count Geoffrey of Anjou. - Henry II of England - Geoffrey de Gatinais, count of Nates - William of Gatinais, count of Poitou WHERE SHE DIED: - She died at Rouen on France. - She was buried in Rouen Cathedral; her epitaph reads: Here lies the daughter, wife, and mother of Henry.” ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF WHY SHE WAS FAMOUS: - She was the only woman to assume the throne of England during the Middle Ages COUSINS: - The cousin of Stephen de Blois (king Stephen) who seized the English Throne - Stephen swore an oath recognizing her as heir to the English throne. However, when Henry I died in December 1135, Stephen broke his promise and quickly had himself crowned king of England. WHY SHE WASN’T QUEEN: - She thought that it will make her look less because all the previous queens were wives of kings without any rights to rule. - Instead, she chose to be known as Lady of the English FOOD: - Three or four meals a day - Breakfast was about 7:00 AM - The main meal began at 10:00 AM and lasted until midday - Supper was in the late afternoon - Sometimes people ate something before going to bed - The lord’s family ate meat every day, as well as white bread and sweet, sugary things. FAMILY LIFE: - Women in the castle took care of the children and spun and wove cloth to make clothes. - Women servants looked after the lord’s family and helped to clean the castle and cook - Lived in castles TRANSPORT: - They would ride everywhere as they had enough money to afford a horse - Ladies travelled in a travelling carriage, which was like a huge cart filled with cushions and covered with a decorated cloth. BEDROOM: - Did not have fireplaces, so beds had many layers of bedding. - They had curtains all around, for privacy and to keep out the drafts CLOTHING: - Women wore clothes that came down to the ground, such as long dresses. STAYING CLEAN AND HEALTHY: - They had a bathtub- a wooden barrel- shaped tub that was filled with water heated on the kitchen fire. - If needed to be padded with cloth, so they would not get splinters WHERE SHE LIVED: - She lived in Germany at the age of 8
