Born Nancy Hazle in Blue Mountain, Alabama in 1905 to Loulisa "Lou" and James Hazle. It's possible that Nancy was born out-of-wedlock.

When she was 16, she married Charles "Charley" Braggs, who was living with and supporting his mother. The new couple lived with Mrs. Braggs. Nannie and Charles had four daughters ~~between~~ their ~~marriage~~ and ~~1930~~.
