    Ray Milland is an alcoholic, this film covers one binge.  Jane Wyman provides thin romantic interest.

The Chase (1946) law and order suspense added 25 Aug 09
    starring Robert Cummings, Michele Morgan, Steve Cochran, Peter Lorre
An unemployed man Robert Cummings returns a wallet to a man Steve Cochran who turns out to be apparently a small-time mobster, and in return the mobster gives him a job as his chauffeur.  Peter Lorre is the mobster's slimy side-kick and Michele Morgan plays the dame who wants to split.
At first this plays like a typical film noire but stay tuned for a twist.

A wealthy widow left unexpectedly penniless, devises an ingenious plan.  A plan of murder!  Perhaps the number one or at least one of the all-time best versions of this kind of story.  Geraldine Page is villainous.  Pay attention for the twist ending.

  • Two women (Debbie and Shelley) who's sons have been sentenced to life imprisonment for a horrible murder, move to Hollywood together and open a studio to teach children how to dance.  But a mysterious stranger appears to be stalking them in revenge for the crime.Dennis Weaver as the love interest of Debbie Reynolds.
  • A stunning performance by Shelley Winters.  Brilliant and shocking.

Shelley Winters' young daughter Catherine dies in a tragic accident, upon which she goes a bit nutty and keeps the mummified body for years afterward. Meanwhile she takes a liking to an orphan girl named Katy (Chloe Franks) about the same age as Catherine was when she died.  Katy's brother (Mark Lester), also an orphan suspects something strange is up and he investigates.

Shelly in almost a one-woman show here is amazing, in this Hansel-and-Gretel-like story with a psychotic twist.  A must see.
    Trivia: You recognize Mark Lester as Oliver Twist in 1968's musical Oliver!

Savannah Smiles (1982) comedy suspense added 22 Sep 09
    starring Mark Miller, Donovan Scott, Bridgette Andersen
The young daughter of a couple who pay little attention to her, decides to run away from home.  While playing hide and seek, she hides in the backseat of a car.  The owners of the car however, who are bumbling crooks, come back and take off without realizing it.  As they are growing fond of her, they discover that there is a large reward for her return.
    The movie is bittersweet, because while quite funny at times, the ending is left unresolved.

    starring Michael Caine, Ben Kingsley, Jeffrey Jones
Sherlock Holmes spoof with Michael Caine as an alcoholic Holmes, a beard for the true detective Ben Kingsley as Dr Watson.  Jeffrey Jones plays the Inspector.
Jeffrey Jones' best work (in my mind) was in Ferris Bueller's Day Off and in Beetlejuice (one of my top ten favorite movies).

True Believer (1989) law and order suspense added 20 Aug 09
    starring James Woods, Robert Downey Jr
Regularly a lawyer defending in drug cases, James Woods decides to take a case to re-try a murder conviction.  Robert Downey Jr is his law clerk.  Twists and turns and a surprise ending.

Dot a deaf-mute who has lost her parents, is taken in by her godparents who have a teen-aged daughter the same age.  The mother, a neurotic pill-popper doesn't know that her husband and daughter are having an incestuous relationship.  And Dot herself, is not quite what she first appears.
