1 William Bradley Pitt

[Edit]
William Bradley "Brad" Pitt was born 18 Dec 1963 in Shawnee, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, the eldest of three children born to William Alvin Pitt, who worked in management at a truck company and his wife Jane Etta Hillhouse, a high school counselor.

Brad first achieves public notice as "Mr and Mrs William Pitt, sister of the bride, and Brad of St Louis" at the Feb 1966 wedding of his aunt Ruthie.

Brad Pitt has two siblings, brother Doug Pitt (b. 1966 and married to Lisa Something) and sister Julie M (b. 1969 and married to Rob Neal). (Source)  Brad and his siblings, grew up in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri, where the family moved soon after Brad's birth. Pitt was raised a Baptist. He attended Kickapoo High School (in Springfield), where he was involved in sports, debating, student government, and acting. He enrolled in 1982 in the Missouri School of Journalism at the University of Missouri–Columbia, but dropped out before getting his degree. He is a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.

In 1987 as "William B Pitt" he is mentioned living at 826 W Primrose St, Springfield, Missouri.  His sister Julie is mentioned living there in 1993 as "Julie M Neal", so either they were both living at home, or Brad was living with his sister ?  Wikipedia reports that he moved to Los Angeles "two weeks before earning his degree", as I've shown, he was still in Springfield in 1987.  So either he was on the "five year plan" as I humorously used to call it, or he took a year off here.

He was most likely in L.A. by November at any rate, as he appeared that month on a episode of the television series "Growing Pains", Season 3, Episode 9 "Who's Zoomin' Who?".  Watch his appearance here on YouTube.  He here plays a high school student (a senior I suppose), but he was almost 24.  A month later, in Dec 1987 he appeared on two back-to-back episodes of the television series "Dallas", episode 264 "Brother, Can You Spare a Child?" and episode 265 "Daddy's Little Darlin".  One or other other of these can be viewed in this clip (in English).  The make-out scene here on the left however I can only find in a French-language version at this clip.  He is a pretty young-looking 24 isn't he?  I can see how he could possibly pass for just being in high school still.

His youthful appearance would change by 1991 when he appears as the cowboy drifter in the hit movie "Thelma and Louise".  Watch his scene here in this six-minute clip.

Brad Pitt's first speaking role in a movie, was in 1988 in ''The Dark Side of the Sun'', although this film was not released until 1997. Pitt appeared uncredited in several movies, and then in smaller parts, but his first widely-known role was as the cowboy drifter "J.D." in ''Thelma and Louise'' (1991), (opposite Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis) which showed him without his shirt.  It is pretty apparent that he had been working out seriously since his first 1987 roles which show him as, a cute but thin and boyish-looking 24.  In this picture he was 27 years old.

Brad Pitt was married on 29 Jul 2000 at Malibu Beach, Los Angeles County, California to Jennifer Joanne Aniston who had been born 11 Feb 1969 in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles County the daughter of John Aniston and his wife Nancy Dow.  Brad and Jennifer separated on 7 Jan 2005, Jennifer filed for a divorce 25 Mar 2005, but the divorce was not finalized until 2 Oct 2005.

William Alvin "Bill" Pitt was born 24 Mar 1941, the son of Alvin Monroe Pitt and his wife Elizabeth Jean BrownI'm going to strike temporarily the claim that he was born in Cleveland County, Oklahoma as this is not really clear.  If you have a credible source for this, let me know.  Someone else's web page claiming it, is not a credible source.  In 1949 Alvin and Betty are listed in a Baton Rouge, Louisiana city directory, then with three children.

According to his father Alvin Monroe Pitt's funeral notice in Mar 1959, "Billy" was then living in Shawnee, Oklahoma.  This would seem to imply that Alvin and Betty were already divorced.  In Jun 1962, the newspaper announces the coming marriage of William A Pitt to Miss Jane Hillhouse.  In that announcement, his mother Betty appears as "Mr and Mrs Raymond M Russell of Shawnee".  On 11 Aug 1962 while a resident of Shawnee, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, William married, in Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri to Jane Etta Hillhouse, a resident of that town.

perhaps about 1981 ?

The family were living in 1963 in Shawnee, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma when their son William Bradley "Brad" Pitt was born there that year, but shortly thereafter moved to Missouri.  They had not moved as of Dec 1964, when Jane is noted as "Mrs William Pitt of Tulsa" when she was a bridesmaid.  He is named as "Mr and Mrs William Pitt, sister of the bride, and Brad of St Louis" at the Feb 1966 wedding of Jane's sister Ruthie.  Jane is named "Jane Pitt, Springfield" in her father's 1976 obituary.

They lived in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri where their three children grew up, and where Brad went to Kickapoo High School in that town.  William Alvin Pitt has been called both "the owner of a trucking company" and "working in management for a trucking company."

I'm not yet sure where Brad's childhood home was, although in 1995, the family was living at 1409 W Sunshine Street, but also citing an address at 826 W Primrose St, and also an address at Rural Route 2, PO Box 88C in Nixa, Missouri.  Bill and Jane were both living in 2010, when they are noted at an address on Josie Way.  I wonder if they don't live in a gated area?  It seems a little odd that the parents of someone so famous, would allow their exact address to be published in this way.

3 Jane Etta Hillhouse

[Edit]
Miss Jane Hillhouse 1958
sporting the chemise
or "sack look"

Jane Etta Hillhouse was born in Missouri 13 Aug 1940, the daughter of Hal Knox Hillhouse and his wife Clara Maurine Bell.  In 1958 she was an officer in Lambda Alpha Lambda sorority.  She was also president of her high school's NFL society.  Later that year she opined, "the chemise is the last spoke in the wheel of fashion."  She is also mentioned acting in several plays at this time.  She was also a cheerleader.

In 1959 she is noted as attending Joplin Junior College.  At this time she is noted in a few plays, as a stage co-ordinator for a play, and as a camp counselor.  In Sep 1959 as "Jane Etta Hillhouse, 19" she was in a traffic accident. In 1960, she wrote a review of the play "Barnaby" and her review was published in the "Joplin News Herald".  In Aug of 1960 as "Jane Hillhouse of Joplin" she is noted as beginning her attendance at Oklahoma Baptist College in Shawnee.  In Jan 1961 she was chosen for a part in that school's production of "A Different Drummer".  She was listed on the Honor Roll in July 1961.  She was a finalist for Queen in the "1962 Yahnseh yearbook pageant" Feb 1962

Jane Hillhouse 1962

On 24 Jun 1962, Joplin Globe :
"Annoucement has been made by Mr and Mrs H K Hillhouse, 323 North Connor avenue, of the engagement of their daughter, Miss Jane Hillhouse to William A Pitt, son of Mr and Mrs Raymond M Russell of Shawnee, Okla.

"The marriage will take place in Forest Park Baptist church of Joplin on August 11, with the Rev. Thurman D Kelley officiating.

"Miss Hillhouse is a Joplin high school graduate and attended Joplin Junior college, where she was vice president of her freshman class and cheerleader.  She was a member of the 1962 graduating class of Oklahoma Baptist university.  Miss Hillhouse was graduated with a double major in secondary education and English, and a speech minor.  She was president of College Players, a member of Theta Alpha Phi and Kappa Delta Phi, and was a cheerleader.

"Mr Pitt, a graduate of Shawnee high school, is a Senior at Oklahoma Baptist university.  In high school he was vice president of his sophomore class, president of his junior class and a member of Hi-Y and Letterman Club in basketball and baseball.  He is a "B" Club member at O.B.U. in both basketball and baseball.  He is a summertime employee of Southwestern Bell Telephone Company."

And that is the last we hear of "Miss Jane Hillhouse" in the newspaper.  Period.  Except in attendance at a few weddings as "Mrs William Pitt".  So let that be a lesson to you.  I don't know what the lesson is, but there you go.  Another brilliant career ended by marriage, perhaps.

On 11 Aug 1962, in Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri as a resident of that town, Jane married William Alvin Pitt, a resident of Shawnee, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma.

The family was living in 1963 in Shawnee, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma when their son William Bradley "Brad" Pitt was born there that year, but shortly thereafter moved to Springfield, Greene County, Missouri where their three children grew up.  She is named as "Mrs William Pitt of Tulsa" as a bridesmaid in Dec 1964.  She is named as "Mr and Mrs William Pitt, sister of the bride, and Brad of St Louis" at the Feb 1966 wedding of her sister Ruthie.  She is named "Jane Pitt, Springfield" in her father's 1976 obituary.

4 Alvin Monroe Pitt

Alvin Monroe Pitt was born on 7 Mar 1913 in Haworth, McCurtain County, Oklahoma ("age 17" 1930), the son of Oliver Brown Pitt and Rosa Lee Dorris.  Robert Yerton reports that "the funeral notice for Alvin in ''The Mobile Register,'' states that Alvin was a native of Hayworth, Oklahoma."

Alvin's parents must have married just before his birth, as Oliver is yet single in the 1910 census where he is living with his parents.  Alvin's parents divorced between 1912 and 1920, with his father marrying secondly Ellen Unknown who appears as his wife in the 1920 census.

I haven't yet found Alvin nor his mother Rosa "Rosie" in the 1920 census but she married secondly in 1920 in Garland County to Henry Wheatley and thirdly in Dec 1924 in Union County, Arkansas to William "Bill" Spooner.  Alvin is living with his mother and step-father Bill Spooner in 1930 in Smackover Township, Ouachita County, Arkansas.  Meanwhile his father as "O B Pitt, resident of Camden" married thirdly to Hazel Merrett in 1922 in Ouachita County, Arkansas.

Alvin married Elizabeth Jean "Betty" Brown by 1941 as his son William Alvin Pitt was born that year.  There is an Alvin Pitt, a painter, living in 1941 in Ardmore but his wife is listed as "Belle M".  As "Alvin M Pitt", a pipefitter, with wife "Betty", they appear here in the 1949 city directory of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, which also states that they then had three children living.  Alvin and Betty must have divorced and Alvin then moved back to Mobile County, Alabama by 1959, because Alvin's funeral announcement states that "Billy" his son was living in Shawnee, OK.

Alvin Monroe Pitt, died on 4 Mar 1959 in Mobile County, Alabama and is buried there in Mobile Memorial Gardens Cemetery, the same cemetery his mother would be buried in fourteen years later.  His funeral notice appeared in the ''Mobile Register''.  His mother was the informant on his death certificate as "Mrs Rosa Spooner".

  • "Reader seeks information on Pitt family", 30 Jan 2008 "My great-great grandfather was William H. Pitt, who was born in North Carolina in 1818. He married Cynthia Parker in Marshall County, Ala., on May 30, 1841. My great-grandfather Thomas M. Pitt was born in 1848 in Alabama. Thomas married my great-grandmother, Margaret Mahan, in Monroe County, Miss., in 1868. Margaret died sometime after 1880 and Thomas later married a woman named Belle Armer (could have been Belle Armon or Belle Ray). It is believed that Thomas and Belle had one son named Oliver Pitt. My great-uncle Oliver moved from Hayworth, Okla., to Louisiana. He and his wife, Rosa Lee Dorriss, had a son, Alvin Monroe Pitt, my father's first cousin, who lived in Mobile and died there March 4, 1959. I have been told that Alvin was the grandfather of Brad Pitt, the actor. I've also been told that Alvin M. Pitt's obituary in the Mobile Register stated that his son "Billy" was living in Shawnee, Okla. at that time. William (Billy) Alvin Pitt was the father of Brad Pitt, who was born in Shawnee in Pottawatomi County, Okla. in 1963. I understand also that the Isbells are cousins of Brad Pitt. Would anyone in the Mobile area help me locate Alvin M. Pitt's obituary to verify this information? This would be very much appreciated. 5 Elizabeth Jean Brown

Elizabeth Jean "Betty" Brown was born in 1922 in Oklahoma, the daughter of Lester B Brown and his wife Una Valerie Coker.  In 1930 the family is living in Bethany, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma.

Betty married firstly, probably in Oklahoma to Alvin Monroe Pitt.  Their son William was born in 1941.

Betty and Alvin must have divorced prior to 1959 when he died in Mobile, Alabama as the informant on his death certificate was his mother "Mrs Rosa Spooner."

As "Mr and Mrs Raymond M Russell of Shawnee" she appears in the marriage announcement of her son William A Pitt to Miss Jane Hillhouse Jun 1962.

As of Apr 2008, she lived in Shawnee, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma as "Betty J Russell".

  • Purported Ascents, and my opinion as to whether they are false or suspicious:
    • Mark Ogle who had a grant of arms in 1535.  Line is flawed by attaching Henry Ogle b 1600 as a son of Luke who-is-known to have died in 1582
    • William Purefoy + Katherine Wigston, but through the probably specious connection of some "Francis Purefoy" purported to be their son who had issue
    • William Ruthven, 1st Earl of Gowrie + Dorothea Stewart, but by assigning some "Alexander" Ruthven, fictitiously as their son
      • Ambrose Sutton+Sarah Warner and Nathaniel Tilden+Lydia Huckstep.  This ascent is going to depend on proving this http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Trail/1262/Sutton-Nat.html
      • David Crawford and his wife Jane of New Kent County, Virginia, but ignoring the flaw that Jane's maiden name is not known, and that David's grandfather as that Malcolm Crawford who d 1592 has been disproved.

    6 Hal Knox Hillhouse

Hal Knox Hillhouse was born 13 Mar 1911 in Mount Vernon, Lawrence County, Missouri the son of Emery Hillhouse and his wife Etta Williams.  On 15 Feb 1935, at Madera, Madera County, California, he married Clarabelle aka Clara Maurine Bell.  In 1947 he either owned or worked at the Consumers Feed and Seed Company in Joplin.  In 1951 is mentioned that he had a partner in this business named Lee Williams.  In 1950 he became a partner in a broiler raising operation "scheduled to have a capacity of 12,000 baby chickens".  However in 1954 it is reported that he and his partner Lee Williams have "purchased a 57-acre broiler farm" from Robert Esterline.  Perhaps his first venture didn't go well, or maybe they were expanding.  He is called "of Joplin" up to 1965, but then starting that year he is being called "of Webb City".  In 1966, their daughter Ruthie married Gary Richardson, son of Jim Richardson of Joplin.  Hal Hillhouse died 15 Nov 1976 at Joplin, but a resident of Webb City, Jasper County, Missouri.  His wife survived him.

    8 Oliver Brown Pitt

Oliver Brown Pitt was born 24 Aug 1891 in Honey Grove, Fannin County, Texas, the son of Thomas Monroe Pitt and his wife Mrs. Mary Isabella "Belle" Armor.  In 1910, he is single and living with his parents in Webster County, Louisiana.  As "Oliver B Pitt, resident of Camden" on 20 Nov 1911 in Ouachita County, Arkansas he married Rosa Lee Dorris and they had a son Alvin Monroe Pitt, born 7 Mar 1913 in Haworth, McCurtain County, Oklahoma.

Oliver appears in a World War I Draft Registration Card living in 1917 in Haworth, McCurtain County, Oklahoma where he states that he is then married and working in a saw mill.  He must have still been married to Rosa as she did not remarry until Jan 1920.  But he remarried by June 1920 to an Ellen Somebody.  He and Ellen appear in the 1920 census, married, no children, living in McCurtain County, Oklahoma.

On 13 Jun 1922, in Ouachita County, Oliver as "O B Pitt, age 31, resident of Camden" married thirdly to Hazel Merrett "age 17, resident of Camden", and by 1930 they had moved back to Webster County, Louisiana where he is living with his wife, 6-year-old son Stanton Pitt and widowed mother Belle.

Oliver Pitt died Nov 1973, having last resided at Springhill, Webster County, Louisiana.

9 Rosa Lee Dorris

Rosa Lee Dorris was born 6 Jun 1893 in Camden, Ouachita County, Arkansas, the daughter of George Washington Dorris and his wife Nancy Rosa Lee Smith.

She married first to Oliver Brown Pitt on 20 Nov 1911 in Ouachita County, Arkansas and they had a son Alvin Monroe Pitt born 7 Mar 1913 in Haworth, McCurtain County, Oklahoma ("age 17" 1930).  She and Oliver divorced before 1920, as she remarried as "Rose Dorris, resident of Camden" on 30 Jan 1920 at Garland County, Arkansas to H N Wheatley "age 22, resident of Parsons, Labette County, Kansas".

There are Wheatley's living at Parsons, and there are also Wheatley's living in Garland County, but it's not clear exactly where Henry goes in this family.  It's not yet known if Rosa moved to Kansas, or if the newlyweds stayed in Garland County.  He is probably that Henry Newton Wheatley, born 16 Dec 1899 who registered at the WWI Draft, "switchman" for the railroad and then living in Parsons, Labette County, Kansas.

On 8 Dec 1924 in Union County, Arkansas she married thirdly to William Monroe "Bill" Spooner, and they moved back to Ouachita County, where they appear in the 1930 census.

Alvin and his wife Betty appear here in the 1949 city directory of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  In that same directory Rosa is probably the Rosa listed as wife of Willie Spooner, porter living at 1210 S 18th.  Alvin and Betty must have divorced by 1959 when Alvin's funeral announcement in the "Mobile Register" states that his son "Billy" then lives in Shawnee, Oklahoma.

When her son Alvin died in Mobile, Alabama in 1959, Rosa was the informant on his death certificate and she was then described as living in "Spring Hill, Alabama".

Rosa Lee Dorris died 5 Oct 1973 "80 years old" in Mobile, Mobile County, Alabama, and is buried there in Mobile Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

    10 Lester B Brown

Lester B Brown was born 20 Aug 1902 in Oklahoma.  Some trees in the Ancestry World Tree project claim that he was born on Sep 1902 and was the son of George Washington Brown and his wife Cynthia Martin.  I'm not happy so far with those sources that do not cite any underlying source.  The main thing that bugs me is that in the 1930 census Lester B Brown's birthstates are given as "OK/MN/NE".  This is a very odd response as you can see.  The parents ascribed to him however were both born AR which is a rather normal response for an Okie.  I would really like to see some better sources on his purported parents.

He married Una Valerie Coker about 1921/2, probably in Oklahoma. Their eldest child Elizabeth Jean "Bettie" Brown was born about 1922/3.  In 1930 the family was living in Bethany, Council Grove Township, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma where he was a freight agent for the railroad.

Lester Brown and Una Coker divorced, probably in Oklahoma, sometime between 1930 and 1935, when she is already married to a Mr Speak and has a son William Speak born 1936.  I'm not certain if Lester ever remarried but he died in 1987 in Arlington, Tarrant County, Texas.  We can be certain that this is the same Lester, as that is the same town to which Kathryn (Speak) Gansz, his step-daughter and her husband Edward moved and where Una died nine years later.  That co-incidence is too much for there to be more than one Lester.

    11 Una Valerie Coker

Una Valerie Coker was born in Sevierville, Sevier County, Tennessee, in 3 Mar 1903, the daughter of Richard Ogle Coker and his wife Laura Trotter.  Una married Lester B Brown about 1921/2, probably in Oklahoma, possibly in Cleveland County where she was living.  With Lester, she had three daughters: Bettie 1923, June 1925 and Amaryllis 1927.  She is listed as the wife of Lester in the 1930 census, but divorced him by 1936 and married a Mr Speak by whom she had Mary Ann, William 1936, and Kathryn 1938.  She either divorced him, or he died, sometime before 1979, as her last husband, of whom she died the widow, himself died in 1978.

Charles Cerba (1896-1978), a native of Cleveland, Ohio died in Shawnee, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma.  It is probably Una herself who is listed in 1987 as "Charles Cerba" in Shawnee, using the old-fashioned way some women refer to themselves as "Mrs Charles Cerba".  She was living in Shawnee as "Una V Cerba" as late as 1993, but by 1996 she had moved to Arlington, Tarrant County, Texas, which is the county where she died 12 Nov 1997 at the home of her daughter.

Her obituary, printed in the "Shawnee News-Star" on 14 Nov 1997 stating that she was a former Shawnee resident, lists the following children:  Betty Brown Pitt Russell, June Brown Ventura, Amaryllis Brown Miller (deceased), Mary Ann Speak Lanier, Kathryn Speak Gansz, and Dr William B Speak (deceased).  The Social Security Death Index lists Amaryllis L. Miller born 14 Jul 1927, died Sep 1991, last resided in Healdton, Carter County, Oklahoma.  Someone has helpfully put up a page of the "Shawnee High School Class of 1955" where we see : "SPEAK, Kathryn Sue (Gansz) Spouse: Edward, 2207 Prestonwood Dr. Arlington, TX 76012". (Even though that site lists her phone number, I'm going to redact that here.  I'm not totally heartless.)  The Social Security Death Index lists several William Speaks, but I'm going to choose the one born 20 Jul 1936, who died Aug 1973, SSN Issued by Oklahoma before 1951.  The U.S. Public Records Index, Volume 1 tells us that Kathryn S Gansz of Arlington, Texas was born in 1938, while Edward was born in 1936.  They named a daughter Hildegard, so he must be a son of that Edward Gansz (b 1901) who married Hidegard Jud.

    16 Thomas Monroe Pitt

Thomas Monroe Pitt was born 1848/9 in Alabama ("age 61" 1910); but note that he states on his marriage license in 1888 that he is only 34 years old.

Thomas was married twice.  By his first wife Margaret he had a number of children.  After her death, he married secondly on 31 Oct 1888 in Hempstead County, Arkansas to Mrs Mary Isabella "Bell" Armor and they had one surviving child Oliver Brown Pitt, born 1891 in Honey Grove, Fannin County, Texas.

Thomas Monroe Pitt died sometime between 1910 and 1930, probably in Webster County, Louisiana.  In 1930 his widow "Bell" is living, as "mother" and a widow, with her son Oliver in Webster County, Louisiana.

    17 Mary Isabella Armer

Mary Isabella Somebody was born 1852/4 in Tennessee.  Her maiden name is not known.  She married firstly to a Mr Armer who either died or they divorced by 1888 when she married as "Mrs Bell Armer, age 35" on 31 Oct 1888 in Hempstead County, Arkansas to Thomas M Pitt age 34.  On the marriage document boilerplate it states "of Hempstead County" which is not stricken out, so presumably they were both residents at that time.

Armor was not her maiden name.  When she married in 1888 to Thomas Monroe Pitt, she was already Mrs Bell Armer.  In 1910 she states that she has had four children, three are still living, I only know of one child  Oliver B Pitt.

    18 George Washington Dorris

George Washington Dorris was born Mar 1851 in Alabama.  He married on 25 Jul 1875 in Calhoun County, Arkansas to Nancy Rosa Lee Smith.  They moved to Ouachita County, living there for at least twenty years, which is probably where he died sometime between 1900 and 1910.

George and Rosa had seven children, but two possibly died as infants, or at least before the 1900 census where Rosa states that she is the mother of seven, five living.  The known children were : William 1876, John H 1878 married in 1899 to Eunice Parnell, Nancy 1880, Marian 1886, George 1890 married May Steadman on 20 Nov 1911, Jessie "Rosalee" 1893 married Oliver B Pitt on 20 Nov 1911 as well. We are missing one child, and it must be that Nancy died before the 1900 census.

    29 Sarah Elizabeth Neece

Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" Neece was born 3 Sep 1836 in Tennessee, probably in Lincoln County, the daughter of Hardy Holman Neece and his wife Alice Catherine Small.  The family is enumerated living in Lincoln County, Tennessee in the 1840 census.  She moved with her family, while young, to Green County, Illinois where they are found in the 1850 census.  They probably moved by 1855 to Lawrence County, Missouri where she married first on 12 Sep 1855 to William H Poindexter, who may have died or they divorced by the time of the 1860 census.  By William she had a son Ambrose Poindexter born 1856.  Secondly on 17 Jan 1861 in Lawrence County, she married to William Saterfield Bell, who evidently also had a child Mary by some prior wife.  With William, Sarah had several children in Missouri, then moved to Benton County, Arkansas.  He died between 1870 and 1880 probably there.

Her son Finis moved by 1898 to Mount Vernon, Missouri and she is found living with him in 1900.  She died in Mount Vernon in 1910, but was buried at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Miller, Missouri.

    58 Hardy Holman Neece

Hardy Holman Neece was born 18 Dec 1815 in Lincoln County, Tennessee. The census tells us he was born in Tennessee and he is enumerated in Lincoln County in the 1840 Census as "H H Neece".  The exact date of birth comes from his tombstone.  There is no documentary evidence that his name was "Hardin", and as you can see from my detailed extracts below, he is never called Hardin.  I don't yet know what the source is, for naming his parents, although there was a man named Hardy Holman who was an early pioneer in Lincoln County, Tennessee.  Bill Putnam tells us that Hardy's parents were John Neece and his wife Mahulda "Huldy" Ellis.

We know that Hardy married Alice C Small.  Sources below claim that they married 6 Dec 1835 in Lincoln County, Tennessee, but without providing a primary source for this claim.  The earliest marriage books of Lincoln County are gone, so we cannot use those as the source.  The will of James K Neece is abstracted in Helen &Timothy Marsh's book "Abstracts of Wills Lincoln County Tennessee 1810-1895," on page 40 (LCT Will Book #1 page 226)  "James K. Neece.  His Guardian Jesse Neece.  Mother Huldy Neece.  Executrix: Mother Huldy Neece.  Signed: Sep 9, 1843.  Witness: W. W. Gill, W. W. Reese, Jesse Nees and Hardy N. Nees. The next entry on page 226 is the will of George Cathey.  His will was (signed 26 Jun 1843) "proven and recorded at Nov Term 1843." (Thanks to James Danley for this citation)  There was a genealogical publication called "Lincoln County Tennessee Pioneers", where in Volume XXVII, No. 1 we find stated in an article "Neece Family" by Monte Neece but without source, that John Neece and Mahulda Ellis were the parents of Hardy Holman Neece.

As "Hardy H Niece" he is enumerated with his wife Alice and children in Apple Creek, Greene County, Illinois in the U.S. Federal Census of 1850.  I suppose he moved there sometime after his 1843 signature as a witness to James' will above, and before the birth of his son William born in Illinois in 1846.  Perhaps it's the movement of an extended family of Neeces from Lincoln County to Illinois to Lawrence County, Missouri that can provide evidence that he is the son of John.  I haven't reviewed that documentation yet.  It's likely the entire family had moved to Lawrence County, Missouri by 1855 when his eldest daughter Sarah is married there that year.

At any rate,  as "Hardy H Neece" he has three land grants in Lawrence County, Missouri, all in S32-T29N-R26W but recorded on different dates in 1857 and 1858.  On 15 May 1857 he bought the NENW portion.  On 30 Oct 1857 he bought the SWNE and SENW portions.  On 1 Sep 1858 he bought the NWNE portion. By the time he had finished purchasing these four portions, his land holdings formed a square.  He may have been involved in other land transactions here, these are just those which were grants from the federal government, not land he bought and sold privately.  For any of these transactions, someone would have to go through the land deeds books of Lawrence County to see if he appears.

Their eldest child Sarah Elizabeth has already married to her first husband there, but he is not with her.  Perhaps he died, or they divorced.  Hardy, Alice and their children stayed in Lawrence County, Missouri.  He has an pension application for his Civil War service as an invalid.  Hardy is buried here, in Miller Memorial Gardens, according to his findagrave entry, in 1895.  His wife Alice as "wife of H H Neece" is also buried in the same place.

With his only known wife Alice, Hardy had the following children:

    1. Sarah Elizabeth Neece born 3 Sep 1836 in Tennessee, married first on 12 Sep 1855 in Lawrence County to William H Poindexter, secondly on 17 Jan 1861 in Lawrence County to Saterfield Bell.  Died a widow in Mount Vernon, Lawrence County, Missouri 22 Sep 1910.  (DC: Father H H Neece born in Tennessee.  Mother A Small born in Tennessee.  Informant F A V Bell of Mt Vernon, MO).

    59 Alice Catherine Small

Alice Christina or Catherine Small was born 21 Aug 1821 in Lincoln County, Tennessee, the daughter of George Small and his first wife Philpena Jarman.
