Ahnentafel an Ancestor Table

What is an Ahnentafel ? It's an Ancestor Table

What is an Ahnentafel ? In genealogy (family tree research) you will sometimes encounter the word "Ahnentafel". This is a German word which means "Ancestor Table". But an Ahnentafel is not any Ancestor Table, the format is specified in examples below.

Authors

When creating an Ahnentafel on any person, that person is number 1.  Their father is number 2, and their mother (his wife or mistress) is number 3.  So the Ahnentafel for President George W Bush is
  1. George W Bush, US President
  2. George Bush Sr, US President
  3. Barbara Pierce, First Lady

George Sr's parents would be numbers 4 and 5, while Barbara's parents would be numbers 6 and 7.  Males (except for number 1) are always even-numbers, while females are always odd-numbers.  These type of brief reports have no room for other spouses, or other siblings.  They are used to give a very quick overview of the tree for a particular person.

A related concept is an Ahnenlist, which is simply a list of the names without additional detail.
