The Delicate Delinquent (1957) buddy-film comedy (playlist - complete), produced by Jerry Lewis
starring Jerry Lewis, Darren McGavin, Martha Hyer
Jerry is mistakenly picked up by the cops as a delinquent, but the kindly-hearted cop Darren McGavin decides that he can "reform" him.  Martha Hyer as Darren's love interest, the uptown reformer who doesn't know how to deal with street kids.

From the beginning of Jerry's career, his movies revolved around a two-man relationship with Dean Martin, and could be read with elements of homo-eroticism, with any female romantic interest of Jerry's always played very light and unsubstantial.  Dean Martin however was played as such a ladies man that that element was obscured.  In The Delicate Delinquent however, the emotional bonding with Darren McGavin seems to me, much more directly encoded attraction.  Much of the dialogue can easily be read as flirtation and intimacy. Darren's love interest is downplayed and inconsequential.

A dark comedy about the strange underside of fame with the odd delusions it creates.  Robert de Niro is a comedian who fantasizes a relationship with Jerry Lewis.  Sandra Bernhard certainly holds her own as de Niro's partner, a stalker.  She is simply stunningly insane at times.
