He was born in Granville, Massachusetts 5 Jun 1826.  He was named for his grandfather.  His father was a physician, Samuel Bancroft Barlow who married a descendent of Capt. Joe Wadsworth of Charter Oak fame.  There were several children by this marriage, with S L M Barlow being the eldest.

By the time he was 14 his family lived in New York City.  He married Alice Wadsworth and had two children, one of which Alice Wadsworth Barlow (1853-1882) would become the mother of Julia Lynch Olin.

He died in 1889 at his Summer home in Glen Cove, New York.
