Installing CAPA

February 20th, 2011

I’ve now installed the CAPA Widget because I want to create an area in my site here that will be for contributors only.  That is, for people willing to pay to view the content.  I had to create a Category called Public to mark all the public entries, and then I’ll make a Category Contributor or something like that, for the pay entries.

Stop WordPress Spam

February 19th, 2011

I’ve been getting ten to twenty spam messages per day in my WordPress, and just the other day I finally figured out how to stop it using the GASP widget.  So I went ahead and installed that.

Next I figured out how to add a Menu to my side-bar.  My next trick is going to be trying to figure out how you upload a file, and how you make a static page.

Unexpected items I’ve sold through Amazon Associates

November 4th, 2010

A few years ago, I signed up with Amazon Associates.  This is a service of Amazon, where you can put links into your articles to Amazon products

Say your article is something about Obama, you could link to his biography on Amazon.  When a reader clicks through the link, and buys something off Amazon because of your link, you will get a percentage of the sale.

Even if the reader does not buy the exact item to which you’ve linked them, you still get a percentage of whatever they buy.

My articles link mostly to books, movies and music, so it’s surprising that sometimes I get odd sales through Amazon.  Here’s a list of some of the odd things which people have bought after coming from my site CountyHistorian.com

Scraping Amazon BestSelling Books Page

March 22nd, 2010

I just wrote a PHP script which grabs Amazon’s best selling books page, scraps the books off it, inserts my Amazon associates ID, a new header, footer, Adsense and Google Analytics and throws the whole thing up on my own server.

Using PHP to Auto generate an Associates tagged Best Selling Books list

March 21st, 2010

They said it couldn’t be done. And yet I’ve just done it. I’ve written a PHP to embed my associates tag into my own copy of Amazon’s Best Selling Books list.

WordPress Installation

March 13th, 2010

In my perusal of Craigslist ads, I saw from time to time people wanting “WordPress” experts. To me WordPress is just a blogging tool, so I have no idea why you’d need to be an “expert” in it. Or how you even go about becoming an expert. So I installed it to see what it’s all about. This is my first blog using WordPress.
